“No, I am sure it is him.” The first man insisted, the grip around Max’s shoulder tightening painfully as he was heaved forward and onto his knees. “I have seen him before.”
Max’s whole body slumped in, his eyes falling shut. They refused to open again, every breath a strain on his lungs.
There was a hand seizing him by the back of the hated steel collar around his neck, ripping on it so his head was tilted upwards, calloused fingers gripping his chin. The small pain the rough treatment caused was nothing compared to the one in the rest of his body, Max barely felt it.
“It is him. Max Emilian Verstappen.”

And in Formula 1, control is everything.So Max learns early on to hide anything that seems “wrong.” The need for closeness. The comfort he finds in his mother’s nests. The constant fear of being seen as weak. Because if the world already closed doors to someone as talented as his mother, there would be no space at all for him.
But secrets have an expiration date.
As the years pass, the championships pile up, Red Bull starts collapsing around him, and suppressants stop being just a career guarantee and become a matter of survival, Max realizes that maybe the hardest thing isn’t continuing to win.
Maybe it’s believing someone would stay if he stopped pretending.
