He rolled his eyes, dismissive. “Don’t flatter yourself. I just didn’t realize ‘nice’ meant bait in cheap fabrics.”
Her jaw tensed. “This is vintage, you absolute rodent.”
“And I’m sure you’ll cry that to the waiter when he spills wine on it.”
“Why are you even here?” she snapped, stepping forward now, braid half-done and fire fully lit behind her eyes. “To return a book, or to take a piss on my evening?”
“I told you. I might not be here Monday.”
“Oh right, your mysterious non-existent plans,” she mocked. “What are you doing, re-alphabetizing the library’s archives for a wild night in?”
“I don’t see why it matters,” he said coolly, arms folding. “Unless your date needs extra entertainment. Is that it? You need an audience?”
