In all the time Graydon spent imagining, and dreading, his wedding night, he never could have come up with this. Though that was mostly because he never imagined this night going well. He’d expected sadness, rejection, and to be quietly dreading every moment of the rest of his life. Being repeatedly ravaged, or even desired, had never seemed like possibilities. He’d never expected to feel like he could fall in love, like he already was.
Airk Tanthalos was unexpected in every way. Partly because Airk was unlike anyone Graydon had ever known, but mostly because it was Kit Tanthalos, not her twin brother, Airk, whom Graydon had married a few hours ago.

Pair the spares, Boorman thought, when he thought about it. Not that he minded; Airk was great company. He’d go a bit quiet at times, slipping away to brood on his own, but he was usually game for a good time.
It didn’t hurt that he looked stunningly like his dad in certain lights: his roguishly charming, utterly sexy dad that Boorman had wanted to be and just plain wanted, in equal measure.
When Airk grinned it was like Madmartigan’s ghost was there, just for a moment. When he frowned it was eerily like how Mads looked on the harder nights of the quest for the Cuirass, and that was painful to remember.
Airk’s resemblance to his father induced a complicated rush of emotions that made Boorman shiver, and reach for another drink.

His eyes widened as he immediately analysed the person he had been groping, a shimmering, blood-coated dagger gripped tightly in their hand. He raised the scope up.
The notorious black and red animal mask stared directly at him.
“Was that?”
He grimaced and stared ahead, shifting the strap on his shoulder. Athena’s eyes flicked over to meet his gaze before falling back onto the road as she pressed her radio and relayed orders.
