Summary
Joseph Robert Whitaker dies on a Tuesday. When his mother calls him, Dennis has his hands submerged in the intestines of a nineteen year old gunshot victim. The vibration against his thigh goes unnoticed between the shouts for more blood and the screaming of the monitors keeping his patient’s life ticking along inch by fragile inch. Eventually the kid gets patched up and the room clears out, standing by to do it all over again.
Dennis, meanwhile, finds a voicemail from his mother - the first time she’s tried to contact him since Christmas two years prior, wheedling him in one last attempt to get him to come back home. He clicks the play button and holds the phone to his ear, body going tight and still when he hears his ma spit out through her tears, ‘Baby, I’m so sorry. Your daddy’s gone home.”

Summary
Dennis doesn’t blame their colleagues for being more than a little suspicious of his and Robby’s relationship. He would be too, were he on the outside looking in: an older attending shacking up with a resident twenty-five years his junior? He’s pretty sure he’s seen pornos that start like this. But the reality is that what he and Robby have is shockingly...healthy.

Summary
Ignoring the inner voice blaring "pervert, you fucking creep" at him, he thumbs over to his texts. He’s got three messages from Dana, sent within minutes of each other.
[5:55 PM] Whitaker’s folks “decided not to come” to his graduation ceremony.
[5:56 PM] FuckersThe last message is a screenshot of a text from Santos, paired with a “go cheer up your boy” from Dana that makes his cheeks pink up:
[6:03 PM] any chance you could convince dr. robby to swing by? he’s doing okay but I think it’d make him feel a lot better, you know how much dennis likes him.

Summary
Mine, Vincent remembers thinking, clear as a bell, through the haze of the exhaustion of a full day’s travel and the incoming wave of stress from knowing he’d just changed his life forever. I might never be back here again, but this one is mine, and I’m not letting go.

Summary
He pushes past the distraction of his body and focuses on Bellini once again, shaking his head like a dog to try and clear his mind. The words come through the phone warbled and muddied, slipping away from him as minnows in a stream. He needs, damn it all, he needs-
“Vincent,” he gasps, snatching at the name as it tumbles out of the speaker and cutting off Aldo’s rant about how unfortunate the timing of all this is. “Vincent, please, get me Vincent. I need Vincent, please.”
