Summary
"Unfortunately, our progress has stalled out somewhat," Ikithon says, slowly circling the beacon on its stand. Under any other circumstances, that would be the thing that drew Essek's eye.
Instead, his gaze is fixed on the man sitting in a chair at the circle's center. A picture of misery, he is bound hand and foot to the chair with thick iron cuffs. His face is mottled with bruising, his rust colored hair hangs in limp, tangled clumps, and his clothes are torn and burnt. Wide, frightened eyes the color of daylight sky whip frantically back and forth between them.
Essek knows that face. He knows it all too well. Not two months ago, that face kissed him on the forehead and told him that he was still capable of good.
The bottom drops out of Essek's stomach. Please not him.
--------
After the peace talks at sea, Ikithon approaches Essek with an offer he can't refuse... But dearly wishes he could.

Summary
There is warmth in his gaze and the utmost patience. Essek had seen those eyes brighten when presented with a new puzzle to solve, narrow as he focuses on something, fondness when looking towards any other member of the Mighty Nein, and darken with determination when facing some trouble. He has also seen these eyes wide and empty, staring at nothing after having been torn through by the demonic wings of Lucien.
Essek tells himself that the anxiety he feels in the pit of his stomach has everything to do with the cats and the cats alone.

Summary
Caleb occasionally pictured what Cad's reaction would be if he knew what Caleb and Essek did together. A horrified expression, words like "unsafe" and "unhealthy" and "self-destructive" tossed around. An earnest entreaty that he stop. Caleb knew he should stop.
But he was not a wise man. And neither, it seemed, was Essek.
