Summary
Race is still smiling as his gaze travels to where their hands are joined, and then—his face snaps shut, and he jerks his hand away as if Spot's touch had burned him.
Spot's heart lurches in his chest.
"Race—" he tries, but he's cut off.
"Sorry," Race says, and the expression on his face would look almost sheepish to anyone who didn't know any better. Spot narrows his eyes. "It's just that I'm a bit warm. It's hot in here. Do you feel hot?"
He starts babbling about open windows and sunny skies and about how he's heard that heat rises, so it makes sense that Spot's attic room is warm, but Spot's not listening to any of it. He's only paying attention to the way that Race has slipped his hand underneath the thin blanket, a curious thing to do for someone who's feeling overheated.
"Racetrack," he interrupts, "is your hand okay?" -

Summary
“You know,” Davey dares to venture, “you talk—well, you talk like you know him.”
He waits for some reaction, maybe hard eyes or a sharp tone again, but it doesn’t come.
“Who? Conlon?” Race’s tone is light, unbothered really, and he's now rubbing the ring on his necklace in between his pointer finger and thumb in an unthinking motion. The lack of emotion in his voice is kind of surprising, which is probably why Davey feels okay to keep asking.
“Yeah. Do you know him?”
The ring turns between Race’s fingers like he’s done it a million times.
“No,” he says. “I’ve never met him in my life.” -

Summary
It's entirely unfair, really. Remus leaving should mean that Sirius can go back to his everyday life, can start to heal from what happened, can stop thinking about the kidnapping and the cellar and the way the air conditioning is much too cold in this car, too, but all he can think about is Remus.
Remus, stepping out of a car with his FBI badge and American accent and tired eyes and walking away from him.
Remus, going through airport security just to get on a too-small plane.
Remus, who would've noticed the shaking in his hands by now and asked the driver to turn on the heat.
Remus, who maybe knows him better than anyone, right now.
"We need to turn around," Sirius blurts out, startling the driver. His eyes flick up to the mirror in a question, bewildered when he finds him in the mirror, but Sirius isn't deterred. "Right now," he stresses. "We need to go back, it might already be too late, but I need—" to see him again. To tell him that I don't want him to leave. To tell him how much I like his tired eyes and American accent and his weird, mismatched socks. -

Summary
“So, uh,” James begins, which is a promising start. “You know the thing?”
“The thing,” Lily repeats, deadpan, and watches as James nods seriously.
“Yes, the thing that happens on birthdays.”
Lily does know “the thing.” James is referring to the game the universe likes to play on all of them, delivering little hints as to who their soulmate is every time they complete a lap around the sun. It’s supposed to get less and less obscure as the years go by, but for her birthday this year, she’d only gotten a small figurine of a deer. She’d had no idea what that could mean, so it’d just gone straight into her suitcase.
Lily looks at the box in his lap again.
“Is that…?”

His PR team wants to capitalize on it, of course, but Jack doesn't want his fake partner to be someone he doesn't know, so who else is he supposed to turn to but his best friend?
Crutchie feels like the universe must be playing some huge, cosmic joke on him. He doesn't particularly appreciate it.
