Summary
if satoru was convinced of one thing and one thing only, it was that he was a failure.
he failed suguru, back when they were eighteen.
he failed tsumiki.
and now, he was failing megumi, too.
satoru felt his perfect composure slipping away from him. felt his life crumbling away like an avalanche, one that he was trapped underneath.
megumi survived. when he woke up in the hospital, he screamed and shouted at satoru. he begged and cried for satoru to just let him die, sobbed into his knees about how he just wanted to be done, while satoru sat there and listened. quietly. attentively. he listened to the boy he had raised for ten years, the boy he had taken to all of his karate lessons and attended all of his parent-teacher conferences, beg for the mercy of death.
but satoru realized something, in that moment. he realized that, just as suguru had said, he was selfish; he didn't care how badly megumi wanted to die, how much he begged and cried for it, because he needed megumi to live. because he truly couldn't take another second of this eternal winter chipping away at his body, as if he was made of ice.

fushiguro megumi was good at overthinking things.
“he's just worried about you. said you've been weird.”
“i haven't been weird. he doesn't even know what me being weird looks like, we met literally three months ago,” he pointed out, returning to the kitchen to angrily take a chomp out of a green apple. he didn't even like green apples, he just needed something to crush between his teeth.
“okay, then, i think you've been acting weird. how's that?” nobara countered.
“well, then i think you're a nut job,” megumi replied, swallowing down a too-big chunk of apple. megumi wondered how big it would have to be to get stuck in his throat and suffocate him.
“whatever, megumi. just know that you can talk to me, alright?” her voice softened, and she looked up at him from behind the couch with concern painted across her face, just like it did back then, before megumi almost fucking decked her. because he was terrible. because he wasn't gojo’s real kid, and he didn't inherit the man's absolute perfection. because he wasn't like yuji, who projected comfort and warmth to everyone he met. megumi? megumi was about as warm as ice.
