Summary
The beat of his heart kicking against his ribcage like a racehorse, Buck's face heats up as tears slowly dwell in his eyes, his line of vision getting blurry each passing second.
It wasn't real. It wasn't. It will never be real.
He keeps staring at the counter, looking through the cold marble, his hand makes a fist and his short nails dig his skin so harsh that his knuckles turn white and Buck swallows down the wet whimper trying to come out of his clenched teeth.
It's wasn't real, it wasn't real, it wasn't re—
"Stop." Buck whispers to himself and shakes his head, his breath catches in his throat and tears roll down his dry skin without mercy. His heart feels heavy in his chest, too big to carry, and Buck doesn't know what to do with it or how to make it go away.
*
In his sleep, Buck dreams of a childhood he never had. Until he keeps wanting more and Eddie catches up on that.

Summary
“I need someone like you—someone who can keep up with him, and have his back, and maybe eventually even rein him in, should that be a thing that is humanly possible to do,” said Bobby, smiling warmly over the remaining half of his sandwich.
“Oh, I see,” said Eddie. And he did now. That’s what Bobby’s whole hard sell was about—it wasn’t personal, it was about Eddie being the top of this class. “I know the type. You see guys a lot like that in the military.”
“Oh, no,” said Bobby, “I didn’t mean to—well, what I mean is, I don’t think you have seen a lot of guys like Buck, to be honest. I don’t think there are a lot of people like him.”

Summary
"You look exactly the same," Eddie says with tears in his eyes. "How is that even possible?"
"I don't know," Buck says, his thumb swiping across Eddie's knuckles. "I don't understand it."
He may be the same, but looking at Eddie, Buck can see the years on him. His hair is a bit different, the creases by the corners of his eyes just a bit deeper. There's a new scar on his right hand that Buck hasn't seen before. He'd know these hands blind, but it takes him a moment to notice it still. His fingers brush over it once, and then again before he actually looks down and sees the thin golden band wrapped around Eddie's ring finger. Then he just—stares at it, stupidly, for a second. Before Eddie pulls his hands back, and leaves Buck's hanging empty in the space between them.
"You're married," he says.
