Summary
People could make a lot of assumptions watching an older man well into his forties holding a twenty something’s hand. After they discard the father-daughter theory, the next immediate conclusion is, of course, that she is a gold digger and that he is just some rich lonely man looking for whatever scraps of affection he can gather up from someone that is only interested in what’s in his wallet. And as much as she would like to deny and refute that supposition, she knows that she isn’t helping her case as they walk through the shopping center, hand in hand, using his free hand to hold the bags of the items that he has purchased for her.
She wants the ground below her to swallow her up and spit her out anywhere that isn’t here.

"I haven't laughed like this since..." Derek says airily, looking up at the flickering streetlight and tries to remember.
"Since," Stiles clears his throat, his voice raspy due to his previous choking attack. "Forever?" He suggests unsurely, shrugging awkwardly and looking away from Derek, keeping his eyes on the barely lit cracked pavement.
Derek looks over at him and Stiles can feel it even though he's not looking back. There's a moment where there's only silence, the sound of cars in the distance and their feet continuing to guide themselves along the sidewalk. Then there's a sigh from Derek and it's a weird mix between happy and sad in it.
"Yeah," He agrees ruffling his own hair. "Forever's pretty accurate."
(Derek and Stiles decide to ditch Jackson's party together)
