Summary
L knows he can make Beyond jealous by talking to Light and he knows he needs to make Beyond jealous to feel happy and loved.
He is not doing anything wrong except for that he knows exactly what Beyond will make of it and when he sees Beyond emerge from the corner of his eye and sees the expression on his face which is dark and sharp and vile he understands that he has won. He pretends he has not seen and seals the deal by knocking two fingers against the inside of Light’s arm. It could be an accident — even Light looks down, unsure — but it is not and Beyond will know.

Summary
When L comes to visit the Wammy House, Backup is not surprised to be led directly to the church; L has always liked it in there, albeit in ways that are not entirely chaste. He is, however, startled when L heads straight for the church's most sacred object.

L’s got some sort of thing about this church. He always has. He loves to be in there, although Backup doesn’t know why. When they were younger he liked to sit in the pews and drink from a silver flask he’d picked up in Basingstoke which he obviously thought made him seem quite cool and before that he’d simply liked to run around in it, or sit curled up with his comic books, or eat candies out of a bag in the pews. Frankly, it’s very odd, but that’s true of so much about L — he seems sometimes less like a person than like some sort of effervescent fae, possessed of a logic peculiar to himself.

Summary
L returns to the Wammy House. Beyond returns to L.
Sometimes the difference between himself and Backup feels very thin. It is unclear to him what Backup is if not another piece of himself, the sequel coiled up and waiting to be written. He is L’s legacy and L is Backup’s inheritance; Backup will only matter once L is dead and therefore L knows his purpose, is no longer frightened of his terminus.
