Summary
Susato does not realize how much she has missed England until the moment she steps off of the steamship and onto its shores once again.
She has had so many experiences here, after all, has learned so much about her family and herself. The course of her life—what she had once thought her life would be—had been inexorably altered by the events of her last journey to this place.
Her life will be inexorably altered again, she feels sure, as she returns today with her dear friend.
She reaches out without thinking and catches Rei’s free hand. “Are you ready, Rei?”
“Of course, Susato,” Rei says, beaming at her. “Ready for anything.”

He’s done his best, up until now, to ensure that Barok never knows about his continued struggles. He doesn’t need his mentor treating him too softly for finding out about the open wound that is Kazuma’s psyche. He doesn’t need Barok worrying that an investigation will push him too far or that he’s not fit for the courtroom because he’s only had three hours’ sleep the night prior.
It’s better for both of them if Barok does not know.
This presents a particular challenge when Barok first takes him to his bed.

Written for All Dogs Go to Heaven: A Klint van Zieks Zine. Rated T for some canon-typical crime stuff (cw: crime scene, dead body mentioned, burglary, home invasion). Otherwise, it's mostly silliness.

Summary
AU: Balmung is a young dog when he is used as the Professor's murder weapon, and spends the decade after at the side of his master's grieving brother. He's an old dog, in the courtroom, when the crimes of Klint van Zieks are revealed.
Unable to face the thought of his last remaining family member put down, Barok is given the chance to leave England until the elderly Balmung dies naturally. Unwilling to give up his apprenticeship, Kazuma goes with him.

“You’re insane,” was what had left Kazuma’s mouth before he could think. He had half a mind to apologize for being so rude until Sholmes smiled in response and leaned forward again to rest his elbow on his knee, his head on his palm. He puffed smoke that left a sweet tinge in the back of Kazuma’s throat.
“Ah. But I can see you are considering it.”
