“She was talking about a summer of boys,” Lottie says, still not looking at her. It isn’t accusatory. Just observational.
Shauna’s stomach tightens again, sharper this time. “She talks about boys a lot.”
Lottie’s pen stops. She finally looks over, her expression unreadable but intent, like she’s cataloging something for later.
“And you?” she asks.
The question lands heavier than it should. Shauna swallows. She shrugs, the movement stiff. “I don’t know.”
It’s the most honest answer she has.
For a second, Lottie studies her like she might say something else, like she’s standing on the edge of it. Then she looks back down at her notebook.
“You don’t have to,” she says. “Know yet.”

“Did you drive here?” Shauna asks. This feels promising, not quite so bitter and shameful as last time. Jackie doesn’t give two shits about Lottie besides being jealous that a girl three months younger than her drives a Sapphire Pearl Lexus. If Lottie decides to follow Shauna to whatever dark corner she needs in order to earn her favor, then this isn’t leverage or revenge, it’s just her. Just Shauna giving herself to someone—selling herself and bartering away what little she has in order to eke out even a speck of what Jackie receives in droves.
“Yeah but I’m not really good to hop on the freeway right now.” Lottie laughs but she looks a little unnerved that Shauna ‘buckle in’ Shipman would suggest driving under the influence.
“That’s okay.” Shauna says. “I don’t want to go far.”

She watches closely, slightly entranced at the performance happening in front of her. Unable to tear her eyes away from Lottie’s hands as she flicks off caps and pours liquid, mixing it in a cup. Shauna can't manage to keep track of what’s even in the drink. Silently she imagines what Lottie’s large hands might feel like wrapped around her own for a moment, would her hands be soft or rough, wondering how it would feel to drag the pad of her thumb over the flaking nail polish—a pretty blue. Then, her mind drifts further, imagining Lottie’s hand wrapped around something else, and—
Shauna shakes away the odd thought. Tomorrow, when she remembers that thought and the one before it, she’ll blame it on the alcohol. She’ll ignore the fact she hasn’t drunk anything besides grape soda up until this very moment, as Lottie shoves the yellow plastic cup—you know, for the Yellowjackets—into her clammy hand.

Later, she will blame Mari for something she's yet to come up with and hell, she’ll blame Jeff's friend too.
But for now, Lottie will open her mouth and ignore that she is to blame for being nothing other than an impulsive mess around this girl.

It’s not like she’d been kicked out of her other school, not really. It was just strongly suggested that she might be better off elsewhere, after yet another incident involving a lighter and Terry Faulkner’s gym bag.
He deserved it, and he’s an asshole, but alas — new school. New beginnings, the principal ordained brightly when she enrolled, and both her and her mom had rewarded his enthusiasm with a non committal grunt and an eye roll.

Summary
Look, of course she has a favorite customer. There are a couple regulars that she likes, but the tall brunette influencer has to be her favorite. Lottie Matthews — yeah, she followed her on Instagram when she found out who exactly she was from gossip-hungry Ben, so what? — is about as rich and privileged as most of their customer base tends to be, but she’s also insanely attractive, and nice, and will scrunch her nose up all cute whenever she asks Nat which of the baked goods she should try today, as if they don’t sell the same stuff day in and out.
Unlike the other rich assholes that come here, Lottie never treats Nat like shit, never asks her if their oat milk is organic and cruelty-free, and doesn’t expect her to remember her coffee order, even though she totally does.
OR: Nat's only working at the bakery to supplement her income as an up-and-coming photographer. Lottie is gorgeous, famous and infuriatingly down to earth, and kind of every photographer's wet dream, so of course Nat is obsessed with her.
