But Mark. It was always Mark. It was always Mark and Callie. They were a pair and there wasn’t room for her.
They couldn’t even have more than an hour without Mark interrupting them. Callie promised her a weekend away, a singular weekend, and they couldn’t even manage that.
They argued, Callie rolled her eyes, Arizona got quiet, and Callie talked to Mark.
So Arizona got off at the next exit and turned back towards Seattle. At least if they went back to Seattle, she could go work instead of sitting around some bed and breakfast listening to the critical details of Mark’s relationship with Lexie Grey. There wasn’t any point.

Callie’s hackles rose at the casual maligning of Mark’s character. He wasn’t a perfect man, but he was a wonderful father. “Look, Bailey, I get it if you’re on Arizona’s side, or you think I’m making a mistake, but Mark has nothing to do with this.”

But Joe’s… Joe’s tasted of gin and Callie’s chapstick and all she saw every time she walked in there was Callie. She saw Callie’s tearful face and her smile and the way she looked that night they went out with Bailey and Teddy and they were happy and they had danced together and Arizona could still almost smell Callie’s old perfume (like bergamot and sleepy mornings and safety) and that sticky, sweet smell of spilt beer and dropped tequila shots.
No, Joe’s was out of the question. It would dredge up too many memories, happy memories that had long since been tainted. And that was the last thing Arizona needed today.
Better to just drown her sorrows at home where the odds of her doing something stupid dropped exponentially.

The guilt she feels every time she does this.
It’s a nagging guilt that settles into the crux of her chest. It pokes at her ribs, begs her to stop, reminds her that Penny would hate her for this if she found out.
Arizona probably would, too.
But that doesn’t stop her from crawling under the covers completely naked, slipping her AirPods into her ears, and scrolling through her Photos app until she reaches her hidden folder.
