“Did you throw your phone in the river last night?!” They heard Maxwell’s voice before the elevator doors had even finished opening. “Bertrand figured out Bitmoji and has been communicating solely in angry cartoons since the news broke and—“ He cut himself off when the elevator doors finished opening to reveal Olivia standing at her side, her hand held firmly in hers. For reasons she wasn’t sure she even wanted to know her ‘brother’ was wearing a big floppy black and white striped sun hat and a kind of crazy pimp fur coat that covered him from neck to ankles, black leather gloves, and holding a black and silver walking stick with a squid on it. And, on his lapel was a bright yellow button that said, ”Pretty Little Rich Boy.”
“I think the most pressing matter here is that Bertrand has figured out Bitmoji. We have to do something because I can’t live like this, Maxwell.”
“Nor can I.” He nodded to their joined hands. “So you’re together now? That’s why you didn’t text me back last night after you vanished from the face of the earth?”
“I’d say we’re enemies with benefits,” Olivia quipped.

“Well you did reject a king and the worlds most eligible bachelor in favour of a duchess who lives alone in a castle in the mountains and has a notoriously bad attitude problem,” she deadpanned. “Right now they’re probably trying to decide whether or not we’re planning a coup or if you’re just insane.”
“Don’t be an asshole,” she snorted. “I meant they’re staring because you’re smiling for once instead of brooding alone in a corner. It’s beautiful. You should do it more often.”

“Threatening me with a good time is hardly the way to go about putting me in my place, your grace. If you really wanted to do that I think you’d have to take me to that dungeon of yours but if you behave yourself for me tonight I will let you do whatever you’d like to me when we get back.”
“If I behave myself?! Excuse you. I’m the top here.”
“Said every switch ever. Look at you pouting like a spoiled duchess because I called you out.”
“The last time I checked, I was in fact a spoiled duchess.”

I realised when I looked at her, I was looking at the purest love I would ever know… and I honestly believed that with all my limitations all I’d do was harm her.” The older woman sighed and took another sip of her wine. “She hates me, Xenia, and the worst part is I know I deserve it.”

“I love you.”
Weak moonlight slanted through the open window across the side table, flecked with glimmering, floating dust motes, some of them swirling around the red plant. Somehow this plant hadn’t sickened in the conman’s care the way many of her own had in her first few years of owning them... it had thrived.
She leaned over the plant, touching the beautiful, poisonous arc of its stem with a single gloved fingertip. Shaking her head in wonder, she felt a tickle at the edge of her chin, and didn’t realise it was a tear until she saw it drop onto one of the the red buds. It certainly wasn’t like her to be rendered speechless by anything… yet she couldn’t bring herself to utter a word as she waited and waited for the other shoe to drop.
“In—In spite of everything I’ve just told you?” she eventually stammered. “In spite of the fact I am a moral abyss?”
“No, my love, because of it.” The artist paused, letting out a slow breath. “Everything you’ve been through, all of it has made you into the woman you are today… and I love you more than anything “
