For reasons she wasn’t sure she even wanted to know her ‘brother’ was wearing a big floppy black and white striped sun hat and a kind of crazy pimp fur coat that covered him from neck to ankles, black leather gloves, and holding a black and silver walking stick with a squid on it. And, on his lapel was a bright yellow button that said, ”Pretty Little Rich Boy.”
“I think the most pressing matter here is that Bertrand has figured out Bitmoji. We have to do something because I can’t live like this, Maxwell.”
“Nor can I.” He nodded to their joined hands. “So you’re together now? That’s why you didn’t text me back last night after you vanished from the face of the earth?”

“I love you.”
Weak moonlight slanted through the open window across the side table, flecked with glimmering, floating dust motes, some of them swirling around the red plant. Somehow this plant hadn’t sickened in the conman’s care the way many of her own had in her first few years of owning them... it had thrived.
She leaned over the plant, touching the beautiful, poisonous arc of its stem with a single gloved fingertip. Shaking her head in wonder, she felt a tickle at the edge of her chin, and didn’t realise it was a tear until she saw it drop onto one of the the red buds. It certainly wasn’t like her to be rendered speechless by anything… yet she couldn’t bring herself to utter a word as she waited and waited for the other shoe to drop.
“In—In spite of everything I’ve just told you?” she eventually stammered. “In spite of the fact I am a moral abyss?”
“No, my love, because of it.” The artist paused, letting out a slow breath. “Everything you’ve been through, all of it has made you into the woman you are today… and I love you more than anything “

When she looked back on the past few weeks, all she gained was one single, undeniable fact. That she was still a person who could do evil, even after all the work she’d done on herself after losing Pegasus. She never consciously tried to hurt anyone, yet when necessity demanded, she could become completely self-centred, even cruel.
“Do you still love me?”
“Of course I still love you but love isn’t always enough. I don’t trust you anymore— what is love even worth if there is no trust?”
They both burst into sobs and she closed her arms around Eliana’s waist, burying her face in her stomach as she she clung to her whilst she remained rigid with her hands dangling at her sides. She wished that the gods would lift her out of this moment of time, and put her back into some more benign one. But it made her feel even more guilty to want to avoid the sadness she had caused; if she had any chance of putting this right Ellie needed her to see exactly what she’d done, even if it felt like it was eating her alive, even if all she could do was cry and apologise until her words were as meaningless air.

Stheno, who had been indulging in a habit Echidna had detested when they were all living under her roof — tipping her chair on the back two legs — fell over.
Charybdis seemed to immediately sober up and sat up right on the floor.
Prime started to choke on the mouthful of pancake she was eating.
Luckily for her, Stheno regained her balance with enough time to smack her soundly on the back, sending a half chewed up mouthful of chocolate chips sailing back onto her plate.
Charybdis asked, “Do I get to come ring shopping?”
“When I told you I was proposing to Ellie you suggested stealing zebras from the zoo—“
“If you’re gonna propose you might as well make a spectacle of it.” Her eyes landed on Prime and she continued, “If someone was going to propose to me I’d be offended if there were no zebras involved and it’d be an immediate no. I couldn’t be wifed by a woman who wouldn’t steal zebras for me.”

She waved one of her bottom hands dismissively as she leaned on her cane. “I’m really quite well. The fresh air is doing wonders.”
That was a boldfaced lie… and it wasn’t even a particularly good one. Frankly, it was as close to being downright pathetic as she’d ever been.
“Would you like to say that again without swaying on your feet, you stubborn, stubborn woman?” Lyrei sighed as she reached her side and steadied her with a supporting hand in the small of her back.
“You’re calling me stubborn?” she snorted. “Please. Do not make me laugh, sweet girl.”
Despite how badly she wanted to be irritated at the fact her sweet Lyrei was determined to make her rest and was giving her the same look she gave to their children when they were being stubborn, she couldn’t be. Not when she knew only too well how it felt to weather the spans alone, with no one who truly cared whether she had the flu or not.
“I really was considering the notion of sitting down but then I was all but accosted by three little pirates who’d stolen weapons from the armoury and made it their days mission to break out of the palace whether I accompanied them or not.”

She snorted. “You, out of everyone on this planet, are perhaps best equipped to deal with such a difficult quandary. You are the best and the brightest of us all, my darling. You tell me why you need to learn to fight.”

“It’s tampons, sister. Tampons. We’ve fought wars. We can handle tampons.”
“They have ones for heavy flow, medium flow, light flow, ones for daytime, ones for nighttime, ones for doing physical activity, ones with applicators, ones without, ones recommended for swimming, hypoallergenic ones— the only thing each of these seems to have in common is that they all contain this same warning on the back.” She grabbed the first purple cardboard box she saw and turned it over to reveal a large orange warning label stuck on the back. “What is Toxic Shock Syndrome and how concerned do I have to be? I do not recall ever hearing about such a thing when I was a menstruating mortal.”

“Shhh. It’s okay,” she soothed. “I’m not upset with you. You didn’t do anything wrong— there is literally nothing you have to make up for… and even if there was any kind of lingering hurt I wouldn’t want you to make it right like this.”
This was something she had seen happen quite a few times; her wife stripped bare and standing in front of her like a deer in headlights, clearly not actually wanting to have sex or in any fit state to consent to anything, but genuinely believing she had to offer herself to her to make things better. Even if they’d ended whatever the disagreement was about on a positive note with a compromise that worked for them both.
It was because Kamilah had lived so much of her life knowing for certain that issues wouldn’t really be forgiven until she’d suffered and learnt whatever lesson Gaius wanted to teach her. So even after problems were solved and they’d each appeared to move on, his voice echoed inside her head. He haunted her. He made her overthink whatever had happened, made her see lingering anger where there wasn’t any and made her anticipate a punishment that was never going to come.

“Nastenka!” The hoarse, gravelly sound of Alexei’s voice calling out the exceptionally triggering Russian diminutive of her name made Annie shudder. It was a version of her name that only her parents had ever called her; a diminutive that was deceivingly affectionate by cultural standards and completely inappropriate after all they’d done to her when she’d been a defenceless child.
Even after years of intense therapy Annie would always burst into tears upon hearing it… and that was exactly what happened. The moment that awful diminutive reached her ears she broke down in the worst sort of crying— the kind everyone could see. It was the sort of crying of a terrified soul that was weeping and no matter what anyone did, there was no way to comfort it. Alexei and Kristina’s treatment had caused something to wither and became a scar on the part of Annie’s soul that had somehow managed to survive years of unrelenting child abuse... and even as an adult it was still too painful for her to bear.

When Annie had first started applying herself to solving the vampire fertility issue she hadn’t imagined that any part of what was about to occur ever could. That she would figure out a way to let them create life together without the aid of a man, or that she’d be able to be the one to actually impregnate her at home- surrounded by scented candles with soft music playing in the background. It would’ve seemed so silly to most couples with different genitalia to think that something most of them had probably taken for granted for millennia meant so much to her… but it did.
Here they were, two women, and she was able to make love to her wife in their own bed before impregnating her. There were no doctors or nurses in sight. Annie was not laying vulnerable atop some exam table in a paper gown whilst someone they didn’t know transferred two embryos that had been made from her eggs and the sperm of some donor they didn’t know. This was something so many same-sex couples had dreamed of throughout history… something they’d dreamed of from the earliest days of knowing one another… and here they were about to make it real.

Serafine snorted. “I think it’s safe to say you’re in for a treat once she’s sober.”
“If I see four boobs it means I’m drunk.”
