One second, Shinri is pulling an arrow out of his quiver, readying up his bow for another hit. The next, he’s just begun to pull the string back before it's all too late.
The beast, one of many amalgamations, hard to discern exactly what it is beneath all the static skin, races forward on all four legs before its claws reach forward and slash down.
Slash down right on Bettel’s neck.
Bettel gets near-fatally wounded, and the rest of the guild breaks down sobbing because of it.

Summary
He remembered putting on a brave face, smiling down at Flayon as he wrapped his younger brothers fingers around his favourite dinosaur toy, promising him that they would be safe, that Flayon would be safe. Bettel would do everything in his power to keep him safe, even if it meant sacrificing a piece of himself.
Except, now that he remembers it all, he wonders if the part he sacrificed was too great.
