In between endless text messages and Skype calls, Dan had almost convinced himself that the man on the other side of his screen wasn’t a real person. A wonderful fantasy living in his shitty laptop screen.
And he said so many things he would’ve never dared to say out loud in those late hours of the night. And he fell asleep behind the counter at the job he hated because he’d stayed up talking with Phil into the early morning hours.
And then suddenly he’d booked himself train tickets to Manchester.

It wasn’t that he felt discontented, wrapped snugly as he was in Stede’s tender affections; he’d always longed to be loved like he was something precious, and Stede was incredibly willing to oblige him in that. Still, there were things Ed wanted that he didn’t quite know how to put to words, some savory tang to keep all that sweetness from becoming too cloying. Perhaps he could just… show him.

Ed comes looking for Stede when he doesn't show up at the dock. When Chauncey shoots Ed, Stede has no choice but to take him to the one place where there's actually a chance they might not be immediately killed or captured: the house he once shared with Mary, Alma, and Louis.
(In which there's a lot of hurt/comfort as Stede tends to an injured Ed, Stede and Ed grow closer as they deal with the various forms of guilt they carry, and Mary and Doug get an unexpected front-row seat to the unlikely romance between the greatest pirate of all time and Mary's sort-of-ex, very-much-not-dead husband.)
