Summary
“Buck,” Sophia practically begs. “What is going on between you and my brother?”
“I-uh-what? Um, nothing.”
Sophia rolls her eyes. “Come on, Buck. Give me all the juicy details. Eddie doesn’t tell me anything anymore. And I need to know.”
Buck shifts on the couch, awkwardly turning away from Sophia but she pulls him back, tugging on his arm. “Uh- there’s nothing to say. We’re just best friends.”
Sophia scoffs at that. “Buck, please. I see the way you look at each other. My brother didn’t even look at Shannon like that.”
“Sophia,” Buck sighs. “It’s-we’re just.” Buck pauses and takes a deep breath. “We’re just Buck and Eddie.”

Summary
“Wait,” the man says, reaching out and tugging on Buck’s shirt.
Buck rights himself and looks down. There’s a small tear revealing a bruise right at his ribs. He sucks in a breath when the man slips his hand under, making contact with Buck’s flank as he lifts the shirt up.
“Jesus, he got you good,” he remarks before dropping the ice pack into the bucket. He continues pulling Buck’s shirt up, big brown eyes flicking up and down. Buck huffs and takes it off completely, swallowing when the man plants his hands on either side of Buck’s waist.
“Got you good, too,” Buck croaks, already painfully turned on. “Gonna be a shiner.”
When Buck starts a fight in a bar, a stranger comes to his rescue. Buck brings him back to his hotel to patch him up.

Summary
Mi media naranja. Half an orange, right? Like—two sides of the same coin, or something. A complementary coupla guys. A little silly, maybe, referring to a grown adult as a piece of fruit, but the sentiment is sweet enough.
“Hey,” Buck asks the girl beside him. “Um, Alba. She called Rosie ‘mi media naranja’. Like—half an orange? Is that a common saying in Mexico?”
“Oh, sure,” she nods. “It’s a pretty normal term of endearment. Cheesy as hell, but, well.” She gestures at where Eddie and the two women are sitting. Alba’s holding Rosie’s hand now. “When you’ve known each other that long and fit together that well… it’s just sweet.”
My most best friend. That’s what Alba said. That’s—well, that’s who Eddie is to him, essentially. And if what Eddie’s missing is a little affection in a language that feels like home, well. Buck can give that to him.
or, buck notices the lack of spanish terms of endearment in eddie’s life since his abuela died. so, he’s armed with what he’s been reliably informed is a totally normal thing to call your buddy. Operation Make My Best Friend Feel Cherished, as he’s named it on a trial basis in the privacy of his own head, is a-go

Summary
“You guys shower together regularly?”
Buck furrows his eyebrows. “Oh — um no. We’re just running late, so we figured this would be more time-efficient. Plus, you know, it’s good for the environment."
For a moment, no one says anything. It’s Julia’s duty, she fears, to give them both a horribly awkward thumbs up.
“Okay,” she says. She’s fumbling this; she knows she is. But she does not know how to tell two men who just showered together platonically that they showered together. Platonically. “Smart. Love the environment.”
Or: In the span of two months, Julia gets brutally dumped, loses her apartment to a fire, moves in with certified sweetheart Firefighter Buck Buckley, and successfully inserts herself into the lives of two firefighters who don’t know they’re in love. Not necessarily in that order.
