    There’s this thing… there’s this thing that she and Rui used to have that they never really got back. Quietly missing, between them, in nights spent working in tandem, in tutoring sessions spent on video games instead, in afternoons on a stage in summer where the flooring burns her bare feet and Nene sings herself hoarse and Rui says try that again from stage left, do it again but project your voice this time, try smiling for me, use your hands, try it again, again, again. Something that Nene and Rui at eleven and twelve had, but at sixteen and seventeen they just… don’t anymore. It got carelessly dropped, lost somewhere among the years that passed, the ones where Rui stopped answering texts and Nene stopped knocking on his window.
