Summary
Purlo set his jaw. His eyes turned cold. He hooked his little finger through his gold earring and he held the knife just under the shell of his left ear. He took a breath. He growled to brace himself against the pain before he jerked his head, ripping out the hoop and letting the blade graze his ear, so it would look like if he managed to wrench himself free before they cut him, too.
Ilia watched the earring drop. The braided wire had been stretched and deformed. It was only worth its weight now. The artistry was lost. A line of ants had already started to swarm... Her stomach lurched. Her toes curled. Her ears throbbed. The world spun. Her eyes burned. Her breath came in quick gasps. She could feel blood dripping down her neck and matting in her hair. Purlo tilted her chin up, forcing her to look away from the mess she had made and turning her head to examine what she had done. He looked like he felt nothing. The nick the earring had left was an angry red. The knife had sliced open, but not removed, the pointed tip of his ear.
"I did warn you," he sighed, “The road to stardom is twisted.”
