“That’s hot.”
Though she didn’t laugh, Beatrice’s body relaxed, just a little. “It’s quite cold actually, especially in open waters.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“I know it wasn’t, I was just ignoring you.” She gave Ava a small smile. “What about you, Miss America? Unless you’re the bouncy patriot who accidentally stumbled into Olympic hopeful territory?”
Ava stood as tall as she could, not expecting to have to show off that particular night. “I am bouncy, and hopeful, but definitely not by accident.” She stuck her hand out, because she felt this draw to touch Beatrice again. “Ava Silva, defender for USA Women’s Soccer.”
She took Ava’s hand tightly, a single eyebrow raised. “You’re a defender?”

Summary
Everyone thought Ava and Beatrice were going to be high school sweethearts. Something went horribly wrong along the way. Mutual friends Mary and Shannon refused to pick sides, and so they’re still within each other’s circles years later. When the older couple suddenly drops out of the cross country road trip they had all talked of years ago (along with a promise that both exes were too stubborn to break even years later), Ava and Beatrice are forced to go on this three week long, non-refundable trip together, and somehow end up not killing each other. The two slowly, reluctantly, - really not all that reluctantly - relearn everything about each other and how to exist around each other once more, in any form.

Ava is a biologist working on her dissertation, popping in and out of a small town in Oregon as her field work dictates; Beatrice is just trying to have a quiet life and keep to herself, but that's getting increasingly difficult. Obviously they fall in love.
