Katsura went silent and sat there, shaking, trying to pull himself together. He stared hollowly at Gin’s hand in his lap, cradled in both of his own. Like he had that night near the end of the war when he had suggested seppuku. When somehow, the hordes of Amanto had become mounds of corpses in the mud and the smoky air was still, and they had thought they were the only ones left.
When Katsura had fallen to his knees in the rust-coloured mud of the battlefield, shaking so badly he couldn’t get up.
Gin looked at him for a moment, then wordlessly tugged on his hand, pulling him forwards so that he could wrap his arms around him and tuck his chin over Katsura’s shoulder, because all that blood and cold mud would soak into his clothes and he’d never escape it, if someone didn’t pull him out.

After the escape from Takasugi's ship, Gin and Katsura discuss the state of their old comrade, which inevitably leads to discussing other parts of the past.

Summary
