    There’s a knock at the door.

    Peter flinches at the sound. He’s never had a visitor.

    Since the world had forgotten who Peter Parker was, he’s been living in an apartment that was the size of a shoebox. It has everything he needs: a stove, running water, a heater that works 60% of the time. It gets the job done.

    Yet, he has never had someone knock on the door. He stands cautiously and focuses on any sounds that he hears. There is one familiar heartbeat.

    Peter shakes his head, recognizing the paranoia that plagues him. He tries to convince himself that nothing is wrong, that he is safe. It’s why he does not check the peephole before opening the door.

    Tony Stark stands at the other side.

    Peter Parker was just trying to have a normal evening after his patrol - as normal as they'd been after the whole world forgot his existence. Suddenly finding himself in the middle of nowhere definitely was not on his list of to-do's, especially when it turns out he's been thrown into another universe. Another universe where he's apparently dead. At least Tony Stark was alive, even if he thinks that Peter is some hallucination.

    Peter shrugs. “Slumber party.”
    “Do your parents know you’re here?”
    Peter grins and slouches in his seat. “Definitely.”
    “What makes you think Mr. Stark wants to see you?”
    The words make him feel suddenly hollow, when he had been doing such a good job at pretending none of this really matters. He can feel his grin waver but strains to keep it in place. “He wants to see me. He is— He wants to see me. He knows me.”

    Or: Fourteen-year-old Peter took the gamble and traveled from his hometown Malibu to New York city for a ‘slumber party’ that, if it were up to him, will extend to approximately twenty thousand nights. He hasn’t seen Tony in five years, and going back home is not an option. But everything will be all right. Why wouldn’t it be?

How he knew he’d never see Pepper again—but they’d fixed it. They’d fixed the world, erased the lost time, set things right—and the kid was back. The kid was crying, the kid hated him for doing what he did, but he was back. He was alive.

    Tony Stark was dead. But now he’s breathing again, trying to think, gasping, hands tracing the box surrounding him, covering him, suffocating him.

    He’s in a coffin. He’s under the ground. He’s under the fucking ground.
