Summary
“Fight back, please. Please. I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” Will cries, pressing down on Mike’s neck. Will lets out a strangled cry as his vision darkens and the world around him becomes red. Mike looks at his friend, his Will, who was struggling against the control of the monster who’s hurt them all. He looks at the bloodied face of his friend, whose tears had turned to streams of blood, and calls out.
“Will,” he says, the boy looking down at him, visibly straining. “It’s… okay. Don't… don't cry. Not for me, never...for...me," he lets out, struggling between sharp intakes of breath. The world around him blurs as white spots appear in his field of view.
Mike thinks he’s never looked more beautiful.

Mike hates Valentine’s Day. It was fun as kids, when teachers would make every student decorate a little shoe box with pink and red heart stickers, that by the end of the day would be filled with cheesy Valentines and sweets.
But this isn’t kindergarten anymore— there are no school-enforced rules that his classmates have to give him a Valentine. He has to earn them. And he hasn’t.

Mike is (not) upset that he’s the only one of his friends that hasn’t received a Valentine. That is, until something just so happens to fall out of his locker the next day.

Mike barks a laugh. “I’m, unfortunately, requesting your companionship Thursday night to see Child’s Play 2 with Will and I.”
She sends him a look of bewilderment. “How did I get dragged into your date with Will?”
“Y’know, it’s really great that I can count on such discretion from you and Lucas. Super awesome that you don’t tell each other everything.” Max ignores him and he continues on. “Well, I tried my best, but he kind of looked at me all-dumbfounded and wasn’t saying anything, so I panicked.”
“Well, duh. He’s liked you since, like, birth. Did you even give him enough time to answer?”
“Of course I gave him enough time to answer.” Mike grits out, voice tight. “I know how to have a fucking conversation with someone, Maxine.”

“Meow,” and there’s no way she heard that right, eyes snapping away from where she’d been distractedly watching the TV screen and over to her brother’s friend. She checks again, and yeah, Will is holding a stuffed bear, not a cat. The beloved Tiggy stays firmly attached to his bag, so they aren’t playing with tigers, either.
“So they go back down the mountain, and now all the village people are asking them about the crystal, and Rory is sad thinking they didn’t get it that whole time, but then–”
“Meow. Meow,” Will declares, removing the teddy from the dinosaur’s back and making it do some sort of interpretive dance.

Or, Mike makes a new friend. Nancy learns how to speak cat.

Mike’s gotta be cursed.
It was fine. For the first time in ages, Mike’s life seemed to be on an upward trajectory instead of plummeting downwards. College had, in some way, fixed things. Fixed Mike. He didn’t even feel the need to dissect what exactly had made his early teenage years so horrifying.
But like a curse, it’s all come back.
