There was no car in the driveway and no tire marks to indicate that there had been one in the first place.
It was moments like these, locking the door behind himself and kicking off his shoes and coat, that Tommy understood grief. He knew betrayal like the back of his hand and yet, he still allowed himself to get his hopes up time and time again.
The air was cold, a family had been shattered, and Tommy refused to let himself cry.
Or; Tommy's parents aren't home for Christmas. Wilbur refuses to let him spend the holidays alone.

Techno stared down at him, hockey stick in hand.
“Why is your hair not ginger?”
He blinked.
“What?”
“You’re an orange tabby cat. Why are you blond?”
In which catshifter Tommy experiences a Christmas for the first time in a home that loves his human form just as much as his orange one.

"Don't do anything to him," Tommy manages, heartbeat throbbing and throbbing. "Please."
Wilbur frowns, but it's Techno who steps forward. "Tommy, he's not going to do anything," Techno tells him cautiously. "You don't need to worry, alright?"
To you, Tommy would say, if he was stronger. He's not going to do anything to you.
But he doesn't. Tommy keeps his mouth shut—whatever it takes to stay.
When Techno and Wilbur Soot-Watson anger a bully, it shouldn't be an issue. They are as untouchable as they can get, for students anyway.
It's unfortunate that Tommy, their foster brother, isn't. Being their soft spot, it only makes sense that he becomes the next target.

Wilbur grabs Tommy’s hand as soon as they’re out of the kitchen, and Tommy is too surprised to do anything but allow Wilbur to lead him upstairs.
And proceeds to be absolutely crushed into a hug the second they’re out of view.
It’s sudden, but warm and comforting, and it’s honestly everything Tommy has been dreaming of for the last five goddamn years. Wilbur is clutching onto Tommy like his entire life depends on not letting go. And quite frankly, it really fucking feels like it.
And Tommy--
Tommy pushes him away.
Or:
Tommy and Wilbur are brothers, separated by the foster system for five years. Imagine what happens after they're finally reunited and Wilbur's had a new family for a while and Tommy... has not.

Summary
"Tommy, kids are always going to be assholes." Phil says, for once sounding like a robot, almost monotone in that way Techno's tone is on the daily. "Just ignore them. They're probably just miserable and," Phil lifts one hand and waves it around, gesturing, before bringing it back down to continue typing. He doesn't turn around to look at Tommy at all. "—you know." he sighs.
"You can a handle it." his dad says. "Just— grow up. Be the bigger person."
A heavy weight like a stone drops in Tommy's stomach. He feels it, and with the stone, his heart as well. For a second, he thinks he might be sick.
Just grow up.
"O—oh." Tommy chokes, feeling a ball forming in his throat, blocking it up, causing tears to prick at his eyes. He goes to try to speak around it, but—
"Is there anything else you need?" Phil asks, endlessly facing away, still not even bothering to face Tommy. "I'm really busy, kiddo."
