But there’s something else that works almost as good as drugs, that doesn’t have as much of a come down because it lingers. Something that 2D thinks he likes even better than drugs, sometimes, but it’s harder to get consistently because he’s too much of a coward to do it himself.
Sometimes, 2D’s favourite way to get that floaty, out-of-body feeling is with pain.

LA and the Last Cult feel like a distant fever dream, even though they only left that all behind a few weeks ago. They’ve been skulking around Mumbai trying to keep a low profile while they wait to see if anyone is actually looking for them after all that cult hubbub, so they’ve ended up in some pretty hole-in-the-wall places. Like the hotel they’re crashing in now, which only had one room to offer the four of them, two twin beds and a little pullout cot.
There's something almost nostalgically quaint about sharing a tiny, shitty room with the whole band.

They’ve been doing this for a few years now, ever since 2D woke up out of that goddamn coma and went from being Murdoc’s community service project to being the shining star at the center of Murdoc’s new band. A real band, a band that’s going places. They haven’t put out an album yet but they’re getting there, and it’s gonna be a good one. It’s gonna be the real thing. Glitz and glam and stardom. Murdoc can feel it thrumming in the room every time the four of them record together, and he swears he can feel it here, too, with his fingers inside of 2D and his singer making breathy little moans under him. Even here, 2D has star potential, and that potential belongs to Murdoc. He found him, he moulded him, on stage and in the bedroom.
(Murdoc thinks about his life and his relationship with 2D, from 2000 to 2025. A little bit sappy, a little bit fucked up, a little bit depressing and a little bit sweet.)
