It's like Midori grabbed a chalk and traced a line between them that was not to be moved. Every time Chiaki got close to the line and tried to smudge it with his feet, ever so slightly as if he's trying to not get caught, Midori would draw a line that separated them even further.
So Chiaki could just watch.
