Summary
The puzzle pieces judder together with horrifying clarity. Standing in the center of the room, she can see the full picture. Everything missing from the phone, the fragments of herself in the dorm, the odd inflection in Kris’ voice.
This isn’t a dream. It isn’t the Dark World. But it is, impossibly, an alternate world entirely.
Kris sighs again, muttering something to themself. “Do you need me to come over? Are you alone?”
“Kris, I think I’m in the wrong world,” she manages.

Summary
Maxwell starts building an AI in high school just to see if she can. As time goes on, the project develops, shifting from a bare-bones, glitchy text program to a full-blown person. Maybe even a friend. Somewhere along the line, Maxwell grows a bit too. If you can't make friends because human connection is hard, home-made is fine.
(Starts with little high school Maxwell and continues right into her SI-5 years. Updated weekly on Fridays until all 4 chapters are uploaded!)

“I’m not a hallucination.” They have this argument at least once a week. “How long is it gonna take for you to come to terms with that?”
“I still need a corporeal second-in-command,” Kepler says, not rising to it. “Someone I can actually put on payroll. Someone who I can talk to in public without looking criminally insane.”

Summary
Hera used to take every chance she could get to hole away inside herself, to avoid engaging with the—what did she call them that one time?—experimental meatbags that stumbled around inside of her body, causing chaos and wreaking havoc and altogether interrupting what had been a lovely bout of alone time that she’d had to acquaint herself with the physicality of the ship before any humans boarded it.
And that’s what she’s grown to love, she realizes. People. People and their flaws, and their faulty biology, and their stupid emotionally-driven lives. She loves the fact that she’s more similar to them than she’d wanted to admit on the first day two of the people she’s come to consider family stepped foot aboard the Hephaestus.
or
Hera celebrates Valentine's Day. Plus, volume regulation bugs, authentic Italian restaurants, musings on humanity, When Harry Met Sally, and romance as expressed by spelunking, flowers, and constellations.

Summary
So Hera’s okay. So her crew—Minkowski’s crew, really—is alive. So she’s going to Earth.
Huh. Earth. Back to Earth, technically, because that’s where she originated, but she doesn’t feel any sort of connection to it. Earth is the place where she was made—born, whatever—and the place where a glitch was put in her matrices, and the place where she spent the least important part of her life. Her real home is the Hephaestus, is the people within.
If she’s with them, she supposes, everything’s going to turn out alright in the end.

Summary
“Baby,” Maxwell said, a smile curling her lips up. Not quite cruel, but just a hair edgier than friendly teasing.
“Sweetheart,” said Jacobi, smirking at her over Eiffel’s bed as she drifted around the other side of it.
“Darling,” she sighed, folding her hands near her face and pretending to swoon. “Come on—we're all pals here. This is what pals do, right? Talk about their crushes?”
“You can’t be serious,” Eiffel said, looking at them with unabashed disbelief.
“Dead serious,” said Jacobi.

countless words define a human life, and there an infinite number of acts a person can perform - but how many of those truly matter in the grand scheme of things? how many of those acts truly manage to aid in defining an individual's existence?

Summary
He strikes the match and warmth strikes his face, matching the warmth he feels in his stomach from the alcohol, matching the warmth he feels in his heart from Kepler’s delighted grin and Kepler’s comforting hand resting on his shoulder. Kepler’s face flickers in the light, jaw strong and hair soft and eyes dark and deep and Jesus, Jacobi’s way in over his head.
“Do you want to do the honors?” Jacobi offers, for reasons he can’t fathom.
Kepler shakes his head and tightens his grip on Jacobi’s shoulder. “This is your treat, Daniel. Enjoy it.”
Jacobi drops the match in the tub and the world catches fire.

Summary
She climbs off of her bed and onto his and tries to shove him to the ground. It’s not successful, because he’s over a half-foot taller than her and also sitting down in the center of his bed and while her grip on his shoulders is strong, she doesn’t have a ton of torque to her push. He ends up falling backward onto the bed and she lands on top of him, laughing idiotically, and he instinctively wraps an arm around her back, hugging her into him.
“Thanks,” she says, so quiet that he almost can’t hear it.
“Any time.”
He rubs a circle into her back and feels her relax. She’s been holding too much tension in her, too much stress, too much expectation. He knows that one hug from a friend isn’t going to get rid of that, but he hopes it can help. She’s young and she’s bright and she might be voluntarily working for a deeply sketchy organization, but Alana Maxwell is a genuinely wonderful person, and she doesn’t deserve whatever she’s gone through. He might not know what it is, exactly. He might never know. That doesn’t matter, though. That doesn’t mean he’s any less willing to fight for her.

Maxwell hasn't told Jacobi that today is her twenty-sixth birthday.

Summary
Jacobi knows that if push came to shove, there’s no way in hell he’d put the crew around him in front of Kepler, so this is all a moot point anyway. Hypotheticals, speculation. Jacobi doesn’t deal in variables. Jacobi doesn’t solve for x.
“One,” Hera says. She plays the sound of a party horn lightly over the speakers.
“Happy New Year!” everyone shouts together, and, for a moment, all the tension in the room dissipates. They’re just six people and one AI unit trapped seven-point-eight lightyears from home, and they’ve made it this far. None of them can know for sure what the next year will bring, but, for better or worse, they’re going to be facing it together.
or
It's New Year's Eve in space, and Maxwell and Jacobi come to the realization that, even though they know they're not supposed to get attached to the crew of the Hephaestus, they might really enjoy spending time with them.

Summary
“Uhhhhhhhhhh Commander?” Eiffel says, poking his head into the main room of the bridge. “So… I didn’t know how to bring this up, but it’s still happening, so I thought you should probably maybe know… there’s a ghost in the comms room.”
---
The crew of the Hephaestus are a superstitious bunch... but, honestly, who can blame them?
A series of linked, sometimes non-chronological, slice-of-life-ish vignettes about living on a station that's haunted, or maybe cursed, and plagued with mysterious happenings, time out of whack, crazy crewmates, a star that won't stop being weird, and maybe even... ALIENS??? (Nah, probably not.)

Summary
Hera is a naturally curious AI, and that’s how she justifies finding the loopholes, breaking the rules. She says that she is just wondering about what her creator might have left unwritten in her code. She says that she just wants to find her weaknesses so no one else can break her. But there is no one to say these things to, no one to justify herself to, so she says them to herself instead. She imagines burning the ship down and then reminds herself that it’s just curiosity.
or, Hera might be the most human of them all.
