Summary
“Shane.” Ilya takes Shane’s head in his hands, squeezes his cheeks so that Shane looks puffy, absurd. Beloved. “I am saying that to me, even though you are retired, you will always be No. 1 hockey player. Fuck Wayne Gretzky.”
That’s what does it, as Ilya knew it would. Shane rears back, spluttering, outraged, trying not to laugh.
“Oh, I have committed blasphemy now. They will take back my citizenship, big crime, very sad.”
Shane smoothes his hands along Ilya’s calves, rests his fingertips on Ilya’s ankles. “Fuck Wayne Gretzky,” he says. He looks like he can’t believe what he’s saying. Ilya wonders, distantly, if he can get it on tape to play back to himself when things feel particularly bleak. “We can live in exile together. I don’t care. You’re my, my best, my second best hockey player forever too.”

Shane decides he has to retire. Ilya, of course, will go with him.

He could never have expected what happened next.

Summary
Ilya had no idea what he was going to do when Shane decided to end things. Because he knew it would be Shane who broke it off. If he had his way, Ilya would keep it up forever. No one else would do it for him. Not like Shane. He was a coke habit Ilya couldn’t kick no matter what he used in place of it. Ilya wasn’t sure what made him realize it, whether it was the way Shane moved on him just right, their voices growing louder as they got closer to finishing, or the constant dread gathered at the bottom of Ilya’s stomach at the reminder that the whole thing was supposed to be temporary.
It was so much. Too much, maybe.
But Ilya didn’t give a shit.
or: Ilya caught feelings and knows he needs to break things off with Shane, but he can't bring himself to do it.
