“I’ll burn it,” he muttered.
“You won’t.” Scarlet lay her hand on his knee to still it. It had become a frequent gesture at this point in their journey. Something she did with easy familiarity ... with affection. “I trust you.”
As soon as she spoke the words, Scarlet felt something shift. Something slice through the air, creating an instant chasm between them. For one brief second, she was able to feel the tensing of Wolf’s muscles under her hand—and then he pulled away.
Dropping the stick, he retreated rapidly to the other side of the campfire. He sat back down, drawing his knees up to his chest. Although he wouldn’t meet her gaze, she could tell that his eyes were dark and brooding.
When finally he spoke again, his voice was quiet ... yet oddly harsh.
“You shouldn’t.”
