Summary
Each breath and break he took, he heard Joanne's voice that first night Roy brought him over for dinner. Roy had been in the other room, and Johnny had taken it upon himself to ask if Joanne needed any help finishing the kitchen, and she'd accepted.
The next thing he knew, his back was pressed against the cool kitchen counter, the chill of the stone bleeding through his shirt and into his veins. Joanne was barely a breath's space between them, her eyes suspiciously shiny.
"I'm going to be honest, John," she whispered. "I don't know what my husband saw in you that made him want you as a partner: you're young and cocky. I bet that when you're faced with a bad fire, you get excited, the adrenaline making it feel less like danger and more like an adventure. But I trust Roy's judgement, John. I do. I know that whatever he saw was enough, and I also know that he trusts you with his life."
She paused.
"But I don't..."
