“Just utilizing my public resources, isn’t this what I pay taxes for?” Gabe had replied, smirking at William again. William didn’t look him in the eyes, instead focusing on the screen, trying to will away the heat that was starting to build in his face.

Mikie found herself looking up at her ceiling, the spots barely illuminated by her bedside lamp. The sun was down now, Willow should be over this already. Things were going so good with the band, they’d survived so many ups and downs – they were doing everything they could have ever wanted to as a band. Why didn’t it feel like they were succeeding? Why didn’t it feel like they were as happy as they should be?
“Mikie?” Sisky’s voice cuts through the silence, sweet and girlish. “I’m sure she’s gonna answer soon. You know how she is.”
“She’s the most difficult human being on earth,” Mikie agreed, letting out a laugh – not because it was funny, but because she was nervous, and she didn’t know how else to expel the feeling. “I wish she would just answer my calls already. Or yours. Something.”

“Sometimes, it feels like I was born on another planet,” remarked his companion, William, who was currently balancing Gabe’s cigarette between two lithe fingers. If it was anybody else Gabe might not have been as willing to share, but William had a way of worming his way into getting whatever the hell he wanted. Gabe would say it had everything to do with the graceful ways he moved, but the real answer was in those puppy-dog brown eyes. William needed only to bat his eyelashes once and he could likely bring empires to his knees. Gabe would tell him as much too, if they were only a few more drinks deep.

Summary
William Beckett is a studio art college drop out, who runs on fumes, bad flashbacks and nightmares. After his ex, Travis McCoy, passes away suddenly, he takes a job designing condolence cards at River City Cards in Chicago. One day, he meets Gabe Saporta, the head of the intramural ice hockey team and local party boy, who just ate his whole lunch. Gabe promises to make it up to him, but William brushes him off. Gabe insists, and days later William agrees to go to Waffle House with him for a late-night dinner. Following the dinner, they agree to keep going for the next month, after Gabe implies he can change Will's mind about him.
