“Because.. because…” He tries to form the words, the disoriented thoughts make it difficult to identify what he says next, “By the time you come, I’ll be gone.”
The cries of Xiao Shuai turn into frantic wails. He’s saying something. He’s asking for something. He’s crying into the phone and begging for his— Suowei’s— life.
But Suowei doesn’t hear a word, having lost his consciousness already, with nothing more than an illusive memory of Chi Cheng’s voice whispering to him.
“Da bao, did you ever love me?”
“Chi Cheng, I’ll love you until the day I die.”

Wu Suowei never gets visited by Chi Cheng the day of his mother’s funeral. Instead he’s left hopelessly slipping through the phases of life until the strength to go on leaves him. He did not expect for it to become a lesson on just how loved he is.

“What if they gave us permission?” Suowei continues, undeterred. “What if they watched?”
“Oh.” Xiaoshuai freezes, except for his tongue, which peeks out to moisten his bottom lip. “Oh.”
Suowei stares at the movement and gulps. “What if they…told us what to do?”
“As in, they told us how to touch each other?” Xiaoshuai asks, and his voice is deeper than Suowei’s ever heard it.
