Summary
“Why are you in my room?” Link asked, his voice tight. His hair was still dripping from his bath, skin red from the heated water. He felt like he looked inadequate in the face of Midna’s newfound majesty. He felt terrible, at the very least. It had only been two days since his fight against Ganondorf, two days since he had beaten an ancient evil and been declared a hero. Tomorrow they were meant to set out for unfinished business at the Arbiter’s Grounds. Tonight, Midna had decided to give him a headache.
“Is a princess not supposed to want to see her hero?” Midna asked with a faux pout, leaning forward so he could see down her robe. Disastrous minx. His face turned red despite himself. “Or is that honor only for Zelda?”

Summary
The wolf looked at her and only wanted. Its teeth gnashed at the idea of her, sending Link into spirals. His eyes caught on her, body hot as the beast drew closer. She was sleeping now. They were in Hyrule field, nothing but the vast blackness around them. It was exactly the kind of place the wolf loved to roam free. He was supposed to be keeping watch but he could hardly focus, not with Midna so close.
He tugged at his shirt collar, afraid he was going mad.

“Don’t patronize me,” she quietly said. “And do not pity me either. I am simply… offering some semblance of an explanation. Perhaps this will allow us to move forward—but do not presume that to be a proposition for friendship. I will never be your friend, or even a mere acquaintance.”
“Never?” Link asked, mouth agape. “How can you even think like that?”
“Because I can only count on myself,” she whispered into the cool air, the charred logs in the fireplace the only indication the room had once been warm. Goosebumps rose across the exposed skin of her forearms and the Princess went to hug herself. “I am but… all that I have, you see.”
“You had me once, Your Highness.”
“That I did,” Zelda managed to say through shaky exhalation, “but no longer.”
Or in which Link and Zelda were once childhood friends—once.
