Summary
Erwin and Levi met in high school. They started dating in college and explored their sexualities and sexual preferences together. They moved in together after graduation with the support of their parents. A few years later, they got married, and four years ago, in their early thirties, they adopted two kids. Of course, they talked about everything beforehand. Money, space, and the limitation of their time together, including their sex life. When they first moved in together after college, they spent much of their free time having sex on every surface in their apartment or even in Erwin’s crappy old car. That’s no longer possible since two children are running around, taking up most of their time apart from work. Sure, they still have the weekend, but they are too tired to do anything other than kiss most of the time.

Shadis curls his lips and sits down as well, looking absorbed in his own thoughts. Erwin watches him, chest rising and falling slowly as he waits for the Commander to process the new information.
“They created something they couldn’t control,” Shadis reasons quietly. “They created monsters.”
“Assets,” Erwin corrects him. “If one knows how to use them.”
“And you think you are capable of using one?”
Erwin tilts his head to the side. “I think, given the right circumstances, I can. Wouldn’t you rather join the Survey Corps and finally get the Citizenship, rather than spend your entire life in the Underground?”

The Ackermans have been hunted down for decades and are known to be extinct. When rumour has it that there might be one left in the Underground, the Survey Corps intend to find him before the Military Police does.

Summary
For a sweet, precious moment Levi considers throwing it all away – killing them both and running, anywhere, nowhere.
Maybe he’d be killed soon after by the Titans, maybe he’d live long enough for starvation to take him down. But he wouldn’t have to keep going. It’d be easier that way – no Titans, no trainings, no Erwin, no grief after his friends – he’d join them quickly, probably. They’d find each other again and he wouldn’t have to fight any longer.
But there’s Erwin, looking at him with both madness and passion he’s never seen before. He offers his goal for Levi to borrow - a goal bigger than just leaving the Underground, bigger even than the world beyond the Walls he’s only just discovered. There’s humanity and future. There’s hope and dreams. There’s a brave, new world hidden somewhere in this wide land.
Erwin’s bright and powerful like the sun, and some of his light illuminates Levi too, hot, almost scorching.
But Levi is what people always told him he is - a rat, a thug, a son of a whore. Something made in darkness, poisonous and deadly. He’s cold and unforgiving. He doesn’t have any light inside - he feels hollow and dark.
Is he even allowed to dream about being something more?

All of the nasty fights that they had encountered to get this far into life has never reduced his loyal assistant into this: muscular body shaking from the poorly-hidden agony that it endured, as those wide-eyed, gray irises that rarely showed what Philippe was thinking now looked at Corbeau for a solution— to be saved from a brutal end.
Oh, and how Corbeau fervently wanted them to survive and live to tell this tale.
Or: when Philippe got injured during battle in an effort to protect Corbeau, it was now up to the Rust Syndicate boss to save them from being mauled by Rouge Mega Evolution Pokémon. What he does next was not only a scientific breakthrough, but a sign that their love would persevere, no matter how grim Lumiose city came to be.

His guards were erected so impossibly high that no one could hope to scale it and reach him, on the other side, but the fact that Philippe paused and waited was his compromise, when his agony choked him by the neck, cutting off all the words he needed to say, to ask to be saved from himself.
Corbeau was determined to do it anyway, whether Philippe begged him to do so or not.
Or: when a Rust Syndicate grunt nearly died on his watch, Philippe spiraled into an old habit that should have died long ago, in his abandoned past. The difference between then and now was that Philippe has Corbeau to catch him, before he fell deeper into his personal hell.
