Shadis curls his lips and sits down as well, looking absorbed in his own thoughts. Erwin watches him, chest rising and falling slowly as he waits for the Commander to process the new information.
“They created something they couldn’t control,” Shadis reasons quietly. “They created monsters.”
“Assets,” Erwin corrects him. “If one knows how to use them.”
“And you think you are capable of using one?”
Erwin tilts his head to the side. “I think, given the right circumstances, I can. Wouldn’t you rather join the Survey Corps and finally get the Citizenship, rather than spend your entire life in the Underground?”

The Ackermans have been hunted down for decades and are known to be extinct. When rumour has it that there might be one left in the Underground, the Survey Corps intend to find him before the Military Police does.

Summary
For a sweet, precious moment Levi considers throwing it all away – killing them both and running, anywhere, nowhere.
Maybe he’d be killed soon after by the Titans, maybe he’d live long enough for starvation to take him down. But he wouldn’t have to keep going. Corbeau was determined to do it anyway, whether Philippe begged him to do so or not.
Or: when a Rust Syndicate grunt nearly died on his watch, Philippe spiraled into an old habit that should have died long ago, in his abandoned past. The difference between then and now was that Philippe has Corbeau to catch him, before he fell deeper into his personal hell.

Erwin nods, and reaches for the nearest carved sculpture before them. “Yes. For the mating ceremony of Duchess Zoë and Lord Berner.”
The craftsman's eyes widened in recognition. “I have heard rumors of the Duchess's particular tastes. If I may—?”
“You may,” Erwin grants the man permission. He disappears back behind the burnt orange curtain that separates the shop front from his workshop, leaving Erwin and Levi with a tray of intricately detailed phallus–shaped objects.
Levi picks up one that appears to be carved from antler. “Finest in the capital city?”
A stroke of pink, bright as a spring rose petal, blooms across Erwin's cheekbone at the question. He clearly knows where this is going already. “Yes.”
“Fit only for the heir to the throne and his mate?”
“Yes.” Despite his steady tone, the color of his cheeks deepens, turning crimson.
