Summary
Teddy’s knowledge of his past is limited. He knows his name, but he can't remember where he was born, nor his parents' identities.
James is the eldest of three and heir to the throne. His future as king has been certain from the moment of his birth.
Though different due to class and education, they had been friends since childhood. It was no surprise that their friendship developed in intensity through the years, turning into mutual admiration and love.
While they truly did love each other, there was still much to overcome. As crown prince, James was expected to choose a wife and have children in order to ensure the future of his country.
On the other hand, though Teddy returned the prince's love, his feelings of inadequacy due to his amnesia and simple position in the military made it difficult to accept.
Together they have to face individual demons, as well as outside forces that seem desperate to keep them apart. One wrong move and they could lose each other for good, before they’d even begun to enjoy being in love.

He wanted to follow. He wanted to turn to James and reach his arms out, collect his friend against his chest and not let go, but he couldn’t tell where he was, what direction, or if he was even in the room. He didn’t realize he was swaying on his feet, didn’t realize he couldn’t see his cousin’s face anymore, as he heard James speak once more, his voice calling to Sirius once again.
“Sirius…”
And Sirius let his body fall in the direction of that voice. He wasn’t scared or alarmed. He knew James would catch him. He always did in these situations. James would catch Sirius as he fell from the stunning spell, steadying him and assuring the man was alright before they both took up their wands to fight Bellatrix together. Just like old times.
But… James was dead… wasn’t he?

Pain is relative to the individual. That's something James understands unless the pain is his.
In his mind, where he harbors deep resentment in himself for his ignorance regarding the situation with Delphini, the pain he feels is justified. Atonement for his inability to protect Albus, and his inadequacy as a brother.
The process of those thoughts validates his belief that every ounce of pain he receives is deserved, but as he indulges himself in those vices of abuse, it doesn't occur to him that his mental decay is more obvious to those around him than he realizes.
