Summary
(The way you hold the cleaver— It's not Montréal’s best knifework. Or good form. Your wrist is bent, tight, the thumb tugs unpleasantly at your elbow— it's a very weak grip, tense and painful for nothing to show for it.
But Sam doesn't know that, and for the few seconds you have to think, the pain grounds you well enough that you aren't tempted— that you don't do anything unfortunate.)
A second. A second second. You think you hear the clock, faintly, ticking, through sets of walls, and your eyes fall on the bodies you made him carry out. The door is still open.
“Tell me,” You say, measured, “How you killed them.”

Summary
He looks up to you like a deer in headlights, pressed against his bathroom walls, shirt off and pants tugged down. For a moment, you feel unfamiliar mortification at thinking you'e interrupted him jerking off.
Then you see the knife by his side, and the small multitude of sharp blue eyes peeking from under his bandages, and you wish he had been jerking off.
(Or, in which Sam's "luck" at dodging near fatal scenarios involves... An unfortunate complication.
Hellen helps.)

Summary
You’re the shoulder people will allow themselves to lean on even if they know they should stand on their own two feet, and you don’t have advice but you promise to be there, and you stick to it.
Unlike your squadmates, you receive not a single reprimand— you never need any higher up to step in and correct, to smooth over a mean act. The only time you are called up is to be praised, and you luxuriate in it.
You have plans, ambitions. You have thoughts.
You have enough apprehension to be mistaken for fear.

Summary
The thing about self-supporting systems was that, if there wasn’t redundant measures, any small flaw was enough to make things stop working.
The thing about stress was that it tended to make people worse. And one of the most common ways people got worse was by becoming unreliable.
That sounded mean. But it wasn’t wrong .
Any other words you could come up with wouldn’t have softened the blow. Unsteady, untrustworthy.
The crux of the matter was that stress tended to make people slip up. Lose control. And when they did, they tried to regain it, but their nerves had gotten jittery, so they would eventually slip up again, get frustrated, and—
And it would take the smallest things for them to blow up, or collapse.
[...]
Stress made people worse. And you were very, very stressed.
(Or, in which Mirabelle thinks about stress, people, and lowercase c changes.)

There's something wrong with you — on a deep, fundamental level you can't see, hooked somewhere between tissue and formation, between organ and muscle.
Fine. What now?
