Summary
"There has to be something you want to come back for. Something you can’t die without doing.”
Robby’s gaze roamed across Dennis's face, tracing the planes and sharp angles of his features like he was trying to commit them to memory. He already had a long time ago. The horrible, aching knot in his chest dedicated to Dennis was a piece of Robby that he tried, time and time again, to rip out. Always to no avail.
If he had anything to come back for, it’d be this one thing.
"Marry me," Robby said.
Robby, about to head out for his sabbatical and never return, thinks to hell with it—nothing matters except for the very real, very inappropriate feelings he's been harboring for his first-year resident. So he proposes. And before he can take it back, Whitaker says yes.

Summary
“What’ve we got?”
The voice cuts in from outside the curtain. Familiar and sharp. Whitaker’s stomach drops before he even turns his head. Of course.
The curtain pulls back and Whitaker feels this is a whole other punishment. The final blow to even the burden he’s been carrying. The weight that extends his lung and his gold cross.
Robby steps in mid-motion, already pulling on gloves. His attention on the chart handed to him.
“Male, chest trauma, possible pneumo—” he starts, looks up.
He stops. Everything pauses for a moment.
“...Whitaker?”
Whitaker manages something like a breath. “Hey.”
It comes out much rougher than he intended. Robby’s eyes drop immediately, to the chest movement, oxygen, monitor, the way Whitaker sits slightly forward on the bed. He processes all of it in seconds.
“What the hell happened to you?”
“Horse,” Whitaker tries exhaling.
“A horse.”
“Yeah.”
Robby blinks once. “You got kicked by a horse?”
“It happens.”
Robby shakes his head slightly. “It shouldn’t happen to you.”
