Summary
Stepping forward, he grabbed hold of Wei Ying’s wrist, closing his eyes as he felt for the core he had gotten familiar with a few weeks prior.
This time, though, it was not the playful strength that greeted him, soft and warm. A raw emptiness, cold and biting, was the only thing that responded to the probing from his own spiritual energy.
At once, he dropped his wrist, as if burned.

Summary
I’m everything that I've strived to be
So do I look like him?
Forty minutes before his shift, Buck stood nervously in front of the mirror, tugging at different parts of his uniform, suddenly self-conscious. He’d worn these clothes for years, feeling as comfortable in them as his everyday clothes — and yet now, he felt like an imposter. Like a child dressing in his father’s work clothes.

Summary
The sting of the words did not last long, though. Bobby had said the words in that soft tone of his, a sense of finality behind them that he couldn’t shake. That finality clung to him. Like he was supposed to believe it even when every part of him wanted to scream that this wasn’t okay and he never would be. The rest of Bobby’s words echoed too. “They’re gonna need you.”
The moment the words had left Bobby’s lips, Buck knew what he was supposed to do. Keep them together. Keep them from falling apart and step up when the cracks started to show. So, that’s what he did.

Summary
His father stood before him, donning the spare robe he had carefully packed for that fateful trip to Lanling — a reminder of the world they had lost, and the responsibilities that still hung around his shoulders like a heavy cloak. Jiang Cheng couldn’t help but take in the tired look that adorned his face. Being the leader of a sect, even one that barely remained, was not easy. And yet, his father hadn’t faltered, never let his burdens show, at least not to his children.

Summary
“Have I ever told you about how I coped with being under Gerrard?” Tommy wasn’t looking at him, just staring at the water bottle's label as he picked at it.
“No?” Confusion laced Buck’s tone. What did this have to do with him? Why was he being told months after Gerrard had been dealt with?
“Of course,” Tommy said with a slight shake of his head, “I forced myself to fit into the box he created for me. He wanted this strong, hypermasculine, intolerant firefighter, and that’s exactly what I gave him, and I hated myself for it. All my life, I’ve tried to shove myself into boxes of people’s expectations of me, from my father to my commanding officers to Gerrard. I’ve always had to be this bastardized version of myself to make sure I fit in. It’s a habit I’ve never really been able to break. Even when I went to Harbor, instead of figuring out who I was fully, I just created another box and shoved these expectations in there along with myself. I thought I was content, satisfied with this version of myself, and then you came along.” With watery eyes, Tommy locked eyes with his for the first time all night.

Summary
Tommy perked up at the sound of his phone, a smile coming across his face at the thought of finally hearing Evan’s voice. It had been hours since his brief morning call with Evan before their shift, a quick exchange of sleepy pleasantries and wishes for a smooth shift. He couldn’t stop the small smile from growing as he thought about the yawns Evan fought as he described the breakfast burrito he was making.
His brow furrowed as he took in the unexpected name on his screen: Bobby Nash. He’s had a few calls with Bobby. Mostly catching up or exchanging recipes, a quick way of reconnecting now that they had an excuse to, but this random call in the middle of the day felt different. He could feel his heart rate pick up before he took a deep breath and put the phone to his ear.
“Hello?” He answered cautiously, afraid over what he was about to hear. Evan’s on shift. Should be 27 hours into a 48 if he remembered correctly. There should be no reason for Bobby to be calling him unless—. He stopped the thought before it could fully form, forcing himself to pay attention. He could hear noise in the background, potentially a siren in the distance.

Summary
He had waited and pushed for this day for months and yet, as his hands readied themselves over the strings...they trembled. He pulled them back, closing them tightly in hopes of controlling the tremors. He did not feel nervous as he was setting up. There were no thoughts involved in the motions he had done many times before. Everything was fine until the thought of who he would be trying to contact crossed his mind. Suddenly, anxiety bubbled up within him.
If Wei Ying was refusing to answer, what would make him want to answer Lan Wangji? More than that, who’s to say his soul was anywhere near Gusu?
Or A look at those who mourn, those being mourned, and the life they live after the fact.

Summary
Frustration bloomed within him as he sat at the low table in his room, his guqin placed neatly on top of it. Being unable to help had always bothered him. Failing to save his mother was something he had never forgiven himself for, and so assisting those in need was his way to atone for what he’d done, and yet, here he was again unable to do anything to help someone he cared deeply about. Sighing, he began to pluck gently at the strings of the guqin, letting his thoughts translate into music in the way they had done so many times before.

Summary
“Wei Wuxian is there. You left him there.” The choice wasn’t his. If it had been up to him, he would have stayed with his brother, fighting side by side to defend their home. Instead, he was wrapped in Zidian and dragged onto a boat by his mother. The last glimpse he got of his brother was the sad smile he threw over his shoulder as the Wens got closer. It was so much smaller than the usual grins he so freely gave. Jiang Cheng did not want to think about what that meant.
