Summary
Because everyone has a story of why they are the way they are.
After the long exile on the Isle of Balar, Thranduil and many others return to start a new life. He dwells in Lindon as prince of the building Woodland Realm, and that is where his life takes a whole new turn once an enigmatic stranger appears in his life. This is the story of a reckless, wild and young Thranduil who learns the lessons of life on the hard way before becoming king.
He knew it wouldn't end well. But he let himself sink anyway.
The events of "Don't Go Where I Can't Follow" might be mentioned at places. However, the fic mostly takes place in the Second Age, so reading that work is not necessary (but highly recommended).

Summary
...for the crown is heavy, indeed. Who knew Thranduil had a soft spot for children, particularly those as rambunctious as Bard's and with patience running thinner than a strand of golden hair?
