For a second, she thinks that perhaps she’s alone, but then she can feel something watching her, just in the shadows — were those eyes? —
In the corner of her eye, there’s a little puff of what she swears is fire, into a lantern on the floor that she hadn’t seen upon entry. The light barely fills the room, but it’s enough to illuminate the hulking figure (that in no way could not have fit through the door) covered in what looked like scales, staring at her intently.
She feels her heart stop.
“Who are you?” The beast speaks. “What are you doing in my tower?”

She doesn't need anything, he knows she doesn't, and she knows he knows. And he expects her to say it, and she knows he does. They can both feel the “no” about to be sent out into the air between them.
But not tonight, she thinks, clutching a thin hardback book from under her duvet, and she holds it out, the colorful cover facing him. It's a little old, a little worn, but still intact. It's been sitting on her shelf ever since she first read it, which was when she first received it, so it's remained unopened the entire time it's been hers. "Um," she swallows the lump in her throat. She actually practiced for this, you know, carefully choosing the words she would say. "Please read me a story."
Or, little Eri asks her big brother to read to her so he feels needed.
