And just as he’d begun to feel the tiniest bit safe, Barry’s autonomy was stripped away before his very eyes. Had he watched the same happen to his ‘siblings’? To himself? Barry had promised to protect him, that nothing would happen to him while they were around—and against every instinct he’d built up throughout his enslavement, he’d believed them.
Barry turned to face him, tears now streaming down its face. Astarion’s carefully composed facade shattered at the sight, a mixture of concern and guilt flitting across his features.
“No, wait—I didn’t mean…” he said quickly, stumbling over his words.

Barry and Astarion are two deeply damaged people, making the same mistakes over and over again. True as that may be, they understand each other like no one else can.

heavily did astarion identify with that—the notion that there could be someone out there who could have saved them. two people used to cellars and collars and experiments and pain, people used to the frenzy that swallows their fear and their terror. he remembered a time where he didn’t know what to do with his body, as if he couldn’t quite believe that the body he inhabited was his. astarion remembered laughing, then; when he could walk out into the sun and feel no pain, as if the curse was lifted? (a monster is always a monster, though, his migraines told him. the predator cannot become prey even when it is domesticated.) | two times barry & astarion comforted each other through their nightmares, and one time they didn't have to. commission for @denim-lich on tumblr! <3
