It takes years for Bucky to finally work up the courage to see Pepper and Morgan, to go with Sam to the thing the Avengers do for Tony's birthday each year. The guilt he still felt from his days under HYDRA’s control bore down on him now more than ever, so to face Tony's family, well, it would take just about as much strength as Bucky had left.
He struggles with his decision to go until he sees Pepper's soft smile and hears her whisper as she hugs him, "We're glad you finally came. He forgave you, you know that right?"

Maybe this was his chance. Bucky had come this far already and Sam hadn’t run away, so that must mean something. Sam never ran. He was Bucky’s rock, solid and dependable and so dang cute in his wrinkled nightshirt.
Fuck it.
With a sigh, Bucky squeezed his eyes shut and clenched his fists. Taking a deep breath, he finally said the words that had been lingering on the tip of his tongue for what felt like forever.
