The kid's eyes rake over Buck's body, cringing as he takes in Buck's incredibly pregnant form, clearly realizing that whatever is happening here just got a whole lot more complicated.

Buck recognizes the twitch in Kyle's jaw, knows he's pushing, knows that now is the time that he's supposed to make himself small and apologize and promise to do better.

“Maddie,” Evan said, standing in front of her, newly fifteen. She hadn’t seen him in months and he’d had a growth spurt. He was just barely taller than her now. He’d come to Boston to check on her after she’d missed his birthday, catching a ride with a friend’s older brother. It was the kind of stupid, impulsive move a teenager would pull. But he didn’t sound like a kid when he said, “What’s going on? Maddie. Come home.”
In a different world, she’d lie and say it was a mugging, and because she wanted him to believe her and because he was only barely fifteen, her little brother would buy it. In this world, Evan didn’t even let her get the words out.
“Please, Maddie,” he said, and held his hand to her, and she took it.

She swipes through the photos a second time trying to find the best in a series of good photos. On this pass, she’s able to see past his smile and notices the arm he casually draped over her seatback. The arm he moved as soon as she was done snapping the photos. They look like a couple. The realization has her reaching forward to grab her beer for a long drink.
“What’s wrong?” His voice interrupts her internal spiral, “none of them Instagram worthy?”
“Huh?” She clears her throat, “no, they’re all good.” She needs this game to start to give her a welcome distraction.

A fine tremor had settled into Buck’s hands, working up his arms into his shoulders, and Bobby couldn’t help but feel like he was watching Buck splinter in front of him.

Summary
Moonlight slips through the blinds, both brightening the room in a way that creates a haze of greyish midnight blue and casts lines of shadows across the room. Buck’s side of the bed is nearest to the window, which means he’s facing Eddie’s side of the bed— an empty one at that.
Doubt clouds Buck’s muddled brain, and his eyebrows wrinkle in confusion. There’s no reason for Eddie to be behind him— none that make sense at least— but his hope gets the better of him.
“Eddie?” he croaks out, starting to tilt his head backward.
“Not quite,” the deep voice of an unknown man says.
Buck and Eddie have just started moving into their new house when trouble in the form of two cruel intruders finds its way into their home in the middle of the night.

There aren't a lot of places Buck can sit comfortably with his thoughts, but here—out on the water, body weightless as long as he lies still, no sound but the lap of the waves and the breath thrumming in his chest—here there's nothing in the world to drag him down, no anger no worry and, most of all, no regrets to fill his lungs and suffocate him. Here on the water it's fine that he's alone.
He wonders if Maddie felt alone when she died.
