Summary
The announcement of Princess Rumi’s engagement also comes with the announcement of the Champion’s Tournament: a gauntlet designed to find the most suitable sentinel of the soon-to-be empress and emperor, a tournament coordinated by First General Kwon Mira of the Imperial Army.
Zoey needs a job beyond hunting small game before winter hits. She also needs to know what’s become of her father after half a year of no correspondence. The winner of the tournament gets the cushy job of Imperial Champion and a favor granted by the reigning Empress Celine; why not kill two birds with one stone?

The courtroom was cold, not from air conditioning, but from the way her parents refused to look at her.
Zoey sat still on the too-tall chair, her legs numb, fingers twisted into the hem of her dress until her knuckles went white. No one asked how she was. No one asked what she wanted. She just sat there. Listening. Absorbing.
Her mother was yelling again. Her father was laughing in that fake, sharp way that meant he was angry and trying to pretend he wasn’t. The judge looked tired. The lawyers looked bored. Everyone had folders and coffee. Everyone had opinions.
“You don’t love her.”
“You only want her so you don’t have to pay me.”
“She cries every time she leaves my house.”
“She’s scared of you.”

"Shit. Here." The figure says and then something is being tossed gently onto her chest. She opens her eyes and looks down to see a crumpled shirt, before she glances up and sees a gray chest, slight ab lines carved to them and visible even in the moonlight. Her eyes drift further up and catch on two bare breasts, and she lingers longer than she means to before she follows a trail of blood through their valley up up up to a mouth soaked in blood with two sharp fangs cutting through the red.
"Oh." Zoey says, lifts her eyes further to meet the vampire's steady gaze.
"Yeah."
