“Hey.”
Satoru’s eyes flick to her, barely wavering as she breaks the silence. She holds out her hand, a few pieces of lemon and strawberry flavored hard candies resting on it. She picks out the lemon knowing Satoru prefers strawberry.
“Want one?” She asks. Satoru tilts his head. Like a doll. The sight is only mildly unsettling.
“What’s that?” The boy asks in return, his body still stiff and swallowed under the older-Satoru’s teaching uniform.
“Candies. It’s sweet. Strawberry flavored. Wanna try one?” She keeps her voice soft, lets a little bit of the love she keeps for him peak through, can see the way Satoru’s eyes twinkle in curiosity before it's back to a blank stare.
Has anyone ever offered this boy kindness?

The couch dips beside him and the warm press of Taylor’s thigh seeps into his cheek. He leans into it, another frustrated sigh escaping him as he takes out his phone to pull up the call log.
“More stupid than drinking that bottle of vodka?” Taylor asks, her voice lilting as if she's aiming for a joke and Buck laughs deprecatingly.
“Worse.”

Buck is a big believer. He's annoyingly hopeful and likes to look at problems head-on (sometimes). He likes to listen to horoscopes, read about astrology, and look at his weekly tarot reading even though he's never been good at interpreting it. He gets his palms read on a whim once in a while. He likes to believe in the universe and what it has in store for him. To hope for the best.
A little blind faith never hurt anyone, after all.
It's three weeks later that Buck realizes the universe may not have his well-being in mind.

bobby and eddie lean on each other for support as they take care of buck who gets horrendously sick after taking care of jee-yun. buck reflects on his previous call a month ago where he got caught in a building collapse. some past hurt rises to the surface and he struggles with the idea of being loved for who he is, as is.

LA took him in and carved out a place for him to stay. A place to call home, where he doesn’t have to constantly chisel away pieces of himself as much as he used to and shape his broken heart after what people want of him. There’s peace in existing just the way he is in the 118 - a peace after Abby left him standing on that airport months ago, leaving him adrift in her old apartment with memories that haunt him harshly than any ghost ever could.
But - Buck isn’t going to throw any more of a bitch fit than he, admittedly, already has. Because Buck is almost a century old and he can be mature, thank you very much.
So, he takes it in stride and doesn’t complain when Bobby keeps pairing him up with Eddie. He’s silent, and mostly tries to be a team player. He gets what Eddie needs and Eddie smiles at him, but he doesn’t smile back because they’re not buddies. They’re civil, Buck decides, but not friends.
Buck will do anything in his power to keep the 118 in his life and Eddie Diaz, while a part of it, will be nothing more than a moment in his very long and lonely life.

Buck is a modern-day vampire and Eddie Diaz is simply too pretty to resist.
