Steve nods jerkily. “It’s— it’s weird to see your hands without the rings,” he blurts, and then stares down at his own fidgeting hands, appalled at his lack of restraint.
Eddie’s eyes seem to darken further, and he gets that amused, almost mean tilt to his lips that Steve shouldn’t find attractive. “Oh yeah, Harrington? You miss them or something?”
Steve’s breath stutters. This is why he asked Eddie over, this is exactly the topic he was hoping to somehow segue into, but his nerves are so strong he can almost taste them. “Yeah,” he breathes, and it comes out hushed and ragged. He wonders if Eddie can hear the desire in his tone. “Yeah, I’ve thought about them a lot.”

“Are you there, sweetheart?” he murmurs, his voice soft and smooth. And then there are long, pale fingers poking through the hole, making a come hither gesture.
Steve sees that the fingers are covered in rings, big chunky silver things like some kind of biker or something, and his fingernails are painted black, though it’s chipping badly. He thinks he should probably flee the bathroom, or at least get off the floor… but instead he holds his breath, stares, wonders what will happen next.

Sephiroth tilts his head, a small smile tipping his thin lips into a cruel imitation of happiness. “Did you think that would be enough?” He asks, darkly amused.
His tone is low and compelling, and Cloud hates how his body reacts to it even despite the knowledge of everything Sephiroth has done. Despite the horrors Cloud has seen him commit, he's still as beautiful as a marble statue and his honeyed voice matches his appearance almost eerily well.
Cloud hates him. He hates him so much.

Sora’s cheeks flush red, a pleasant peachy pink which reaches his nose and sadly obscures some of Riku’s favourite freckles. “Well, I— that is—” he sputters, his eyes going big and wounded. “I can’t exactly help that, Riku! Who am I supposed to have kissed!?”
Riku’s mouth goes dry, and his traitorous brain unhelpfully reminds him that they’re close together. So close that he could just lean in… “Me,” he answers raggedly, his own eyes wide as the word drops from his shock-numb lips. “I could teach you.”
It was a stupid thing to say. Riku knows it is, quite possibly, the dumbest thing he’s ever blurted out.

Steve is having a hard time adjusting to the new normal, after everything that went down. He doesn't want to bother his friends with his problems, though, when they've got so much weight on their shoulders already.
Steve stumbles on an alternate version of Hawkins, where none of it ever happened. Everyone’s alive, his headaches are gone, his friends actually want to hang out with him, and he’s… happy.
(The party has to fight another monster. But this one doesn't prey on people's fears. It preys on their deepest desires.)
