It made a flicker sound as he lit it, he watched the way that the flames moved with a hazy gaze.

His mother used to be an alcoholic. It wasn’t so noticeable from an outside view, of course that came with her job profile. Her children knew better, though. She usually was seen drinking from a glass of cheap wine, stolen or not. Sometimes, she’d pass out from how excessive she’d drink, slumping down on his bed and curling onto his legs, muttering off about this and that. Thinking about his mother made him scoff, it was obvious which twin had inherited her exposure to addiction, he thought to himself as the light flickered off.

Sunk-Cost Fallacy. Noun. The phenomenon whereby a person is reluctant to abandon a strategy or course of action because they have invested heavily in it, even when it is clear that abandonment would be more beneficial.

Stanley Pines is dying of a terminal illness. His once-estranged twin feels as though he's wasted so much of their limited time together already, that he needs to invest even more of it into the impossible task of curing Stan.
