Summary
“What can I get you, Neil Josten?”
Neil stood still, staring. He didn’t say a word for what felt like hours, enough time for some memories of blue eyes watching, always observing, to fill Andrew’s head. Say it, he thought, hoping with everything he had in him that this wasn’t some sort of hallucination. I need you to say it.
“I…” Neil choked out, pausing. “I would like a small coffee.”
It felt like Andrew had been physically struck. “Sure. Room for cream?”
“No,” Neil said. “Just black. Thanks.”

Summary
Neil watched the door as more people filed in, checking their names at the door. His gaze caught on one particular guest Neil didn't recognize. In the bright lights of the hall, the man's golden strands shimmered like beach sand during a sunrise. He looked remarkably pale, but Neil couldn't tell if it was the lighting or his all black ensemble. Neil had written the guest list. He knew everyone in attendance, but he still could not place this man. He also could not drag his eyes away from him as if he was a child staring stupidly at the sun.

Summary
“Doesn’t he smell? Homeless people in my experience always smell.”
“Well, it’s not exactly a hygiene-conducive environment.”
“So, he does smell.”
Andrew paused. “No. He doesn’t.”
Kevin looked at him dubiously. “Are you just saying that because you’re embarrassed about being attracted to a person that smells bad?”
“No,” Andrew said, narrowing his eyes at Kevin.
“Okay,” he said, drawing out the vowels and raising his eyebrows. After a moment of hesitation, he continued, “It’s okay if you're attracted to that kind of thing, I wouldn’t judge you. I mean. I would. But I wouldn’t say it, so you could pretend that I didn’t.”

Summary
It was all Nicky’s fault.
Well, technically it was Andrew’s stupidity’s fault, but he was going to ignore it and blame Nicky anyway. They were at Nicky’s for Thanksgiving when the pest popped up the question he would ask every family gathering.
“So, Andrew…” he paused dramatically, because why wouldn’t he. “Are you still single?
And that had been it. Andrew was tired, he was working on a case that took a lot from him. A thirteen-year-old boy who had been raped by his stepbrother since he was seven and it was hitting way too close to home that it had given Andrew nightmares. He hadn’t had a good night of sleep for almost three weeks now. So he could be excused when his sleep-deprived ass had blurted out. “Neil’s my boyfriend.”
His heart came to an abrupt stop the moment the words left his mouth. He felt his mask of indifference begin to crack as he looked across the table to where Neil was looking at him, a spoonful of mashed potatoes halfway to his open mouth.Series

Summary
“Have you heard of his twin?”
“He must be, like, violent or something.”
“I heard he came from the foster system and didn’t even know Aaron was his brother until recently.”
“He’s a psychopath, I'm sure of it. I saw him looking at the frog dissection for an uncomfortable amount of time, I think he wanted to eat it.”
“Or smear its blood across his face like warpaint.”
“Where does he keep his daemon? No one even knows what it is and they haven’t seen it either.”
